Apple To Announce Larger iPad?

Larger iPadThere has been much talk lately about the iPad Mini, Kindle, and a number of other tablets that fit into the “mini” class.  Typically, these mini tablets have a 7 to 8 inch screen, are lightweight, and cost between $199 and $329.  Their primary usage is for eBook reading, game play, and on-the-go web browsing.  However, with the incredible demand for tablets and the fact that the mini sized and regular sized tablet markets are now saturated, what’s next?

It would make sense that Apple may super size their tablet and introduce the “iPad Mega” sooner than later.  Some laugh at this idea and think it’s unrealistic.  To the contrary, we see a gap in the touch screen industry and think an over-sized iPad could do well.

Benefits Of A Larger iPad

Although portability would decrease, there are a number of benefits that come along with a larger iPad.  Below are a few advantages of a bigger iPad and those that may be able to capitalize on them.

Presenters – Have you tried showing a group of people a presentation or interactive demo in a business meeting, conference, or classroom?  If you have, then you know the current 10 inch iPad screen requires viewers to be only a few feet away.  By adding a few inches to the iPad and bringing it into the 13 – 15 inch range, the viewing distance would increase considerably.

Movie / Media Watchers –  Ok, so you bought a new iPad with the HD screen and are ready to settle down and watch some movies.  Unfortunately, in order to appreciate the HD graphics on a 10 inch screen, you basically need to hold the iPad in your lap or set it on a desk a few feet in front of you.  A larger iPad screen would make it much easier to enjoy those crisp HD visuals.

iPad Digital Signage AppRetail Businesses / Restaurants – Many businesses these days are setting up iPad kiosks at their locationsSome are using the ipad as a digital sign or marketing device.  With a larger screen, businesses would be able to communicate their message to customers more easily.

Graphic Designers – In the App Store today there exists a whole collection of graphic design and photo editing apps.  A larger touch screen Apple device would make editing and designing a more pleasant experience.

Vision Impaired – With the baby boomers aging, a new wave of iPad users with poor vision is coming.  That few extra inches of screen may allow many to continue using an iPad who would have not been physically able to otherwise.

When Will Larger Tablets Arrive?

1 year?  2 years?  Our best guess is sooner than later.  In fact, other companies such as Toshiba have already announced plans to offer their versions of over-sized tablets.  The Toshiba Excite 13, slated to arrive soon, boasts a 13.3 inch HD screen!  Also, a number of laptops are coming equipped now with touch screens to give the product a hybrid tablet/laptop user experience.

Do you believe Apple will produce a larger iPad?  If so when and what will they call it?

I have been saying this for a long time, they went the wrong way by bringing out ipad mini.. what are they thinking. instead of breaking new ground which is what apple should always be doing.. to be seen first is a big deal.. instead of making the first large ipad.. they squeezed a new screen size between iphone and ipad with no major advantage. Some are saying they are currently developing a larger ipad… well lets hipe they do it right.. and not just a 15″ screen… but even bigger. it should be minimum 17″ , if they do a 15″ that will just be a fail.. only slightly bigger… even 17″ is still not a big difference.. im trying this message on macbook pro with 17″ retina screen.. I can imagine holding and working this that size screen as an ipad and it would be great.. but 20″ would be even better… i think that would be the perfect size.. 20″ and maybe call it a slate.
Apple Slate 20″ if they mate a 20″ ipad.. i would buy one instantly.. and they should also make the iphone able to airplay to it. and being that size should increase flash memory.. maybe 256gb

A 20″ Apple tablet would be pretty serious. Love the name “Apple Slate” . Wonder if that would start competing with an Apple TV though that will one day hit the market?

I would buy a 20 inch ipad instantly. In fact I’d place an advance order for two!

I would love a larger iPad where you can have more than one window open. iPad mini? Why? Did we really need something between the iPhone and iPad – not really in my opinion.
There are tonnes of other larger touch screens on windows 8 and apple are slow on the scene with this, but windows are slow on the scene with larger touchscreen machines.

Completely agree Bob. It seems like under 11 inches there is now every possible size tablet available on the market that you can think of. Seems like making over-sized tablets would be the only next option available.

I agree and can’t wait for larger tablets – why should laptops, which are used at the same distances as tablets, be at 15″, 17″, and larger but tablets for some inexplicable reason are left as 10″ or smaller? I understand portability concerns but I guarantee there’s a market of folks like myself that want larger tablets.
